My thought is to ask a recruiter or two to give a couple-minute, miles-high overview of what kind of jobs employers are trying to hire for these days.

Agenda:
  • 10 minutes - introductions. We actually fill out name tags & maybe "badges" to describe what it is we do. Swag should be distributed.
  • 5 minutes each - have 2-4 different recruiters mention the kinds of job/trends they're seeing.
  • 1 hour - do some other topic. Any other topic. We've got several suggested.
  • 45 minutes - Q&A and/or meet&greet. Get to know the recruiters & contractors around you, or talk about current working conditions.

If it's not clear, I think this should be a social meeting, not a chance for recruiters to actively recruit.
My personal aim in this group is to get in touch with more PHP users, so I can expand my circle of resources (recruiters contact me almost every day), and so I can be a resource members can go to if they're looking for work

My experience with recruiters is that they are outrageously ignorant of the technologies they are trying to recruite people to do. I have interviewed with several, who never understand a word I said in response to their own questions. They are less-than-useless middle and I do not work with them. Companies would be just as well off (or better off) to hire people through their own Human Relations departments -- they are wasting money for NO expertise. The job descriptions provided: INADEQUATE

We should get Chris "I'm an nerd hunter not a recruiter" from the nerdery's new(ish) recruiting team and maybe someone in sales team to talk about the trends they see in skill demand. Likely a Win / Win for everyone and gives the Nerdery a presentation pattern for getting in front of several of these meetups

Dan - I gave about a 25 min presentation on this last year at the Group, going over current trends, companies looking for solid open-source growth in the next year, many of the companies I've recruited for in the open-source world and my thoughts on their environments. I've placed around 15 PHP FT/perm developers in the past 4-5 years, with a good number of them being part of this group. I'd be open to a more in-depth presentation than last time; I can coordinate if there's interest...

Adam - We'd be happy to have you.
You'll be about the fourth recruiter I've been in contact about this. For some reason none of them have done the follow-up I've asked of them, i.e. to actually show up at a meeting or beer meeting so you can meet us in person *before* we give you the floor at one of our meetups.
    We're getting together tonight: http://www.mnphp.org/events/61745942/
Show up tonight & you'll get first dibs on this topic for the next meetup.
Other recruiters: Please show up too.

Dan - I wouldn't have a problem doing that, as I've met a good number of the Group "in person" in the past (at the last one I presented at last summer I saw some of the guys I've known over the past 5 years; Willbanks, Kandels, Robert Speer, Tom Good, etc). I actually think you were the only one NOT there last time! I'll check with the better half and see if I have a pass to head down there tonight to catch up w/you guys...Akiban looks interesting too...

I'd be open to doing this. I gave the same presentation on this last year at the group, and although it was a small group (15 or so), it seemed that people got a good amount of information out of the info. Mike, I'll give you a call on it.

Many recruiters are hawkish, tech ignorant... However, as a recruiter my job is simple.I match co.s who can't find talent w talent looking for opp. and I have 7 perm php orders.I'd be happy to talk about what co's want w'out hawking + lrn sm tech too
